This past weekend I drove my children 325 miles to Vermont where they will spend four weeks at sleepaway camp…without cell phones, texting, computers, iPods, video games, air conditioning or fashion. It may seem like a horror to some, but my kids can’t wait to get back to probably their favorite place on earth. At
One year ago Crystal Cruises was, by its own admission, not doing very well. It had an excellent product, but fairly empty ships. What a difference a year makes…and Crystal Cruises has made the changes in some rather elegant ways. Yesterday, at the Cruise Shipping Miami Conference (a/k/a “The Home Port of the Cruise Industry”)
I have always struggled with Azamara Cruises because it had a pretty solid product, but no direction and nothing that made it distinguishable. Honestly, I have said to its parent, Celebrity Cruises, that with Oceania Cruises having such a solid product with consistently excellent delivery of cuisine, service and itineraries, there was little motivation to
Silversea has announced it will have the previously announced Pillow Menu on its new Silver Spirit will now be available on all its ships in 2010. They include: *Soft sleeping pillow of 25% down/75% feather*Medium-firm choice with a firmer core and a 30% down/70% feather composition *Firm pillow with extra neck support for sleeping or back support
As you know I have long been a critic of looking at the advertised “discounts” by the cruise lines. It doesn’t matter if Silversea or Seabourn or Celebrity or Carnival is offering a 30% off fare in its brochures because, obviously (at least to me) they have never offered the cruise at full fare, so
I guess I asked for this. I pointed a number of my readers to Ralph Grizzle’s Avid Cruiser website as I posted his short video on Seabourn Odyssey’s cuisine. So today I read Ralph’s post about which is the best luxury cruise line. He mentions Seabourn, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Crystal and SeaDream Yacht Club.
At first blush this may seem like worse than a naive question, but one that is just silly. I mean, how could the two largest true luxury cruise lines not be direct competitors? Yesterday I learned some very interesting statistics. Silversea claims that it actually has more former Princess passengers on it ships than Seabourn
On the heels of Seabourn announcing its busiest days (based upon phone calls and/or bookings) on record, Regent Seven Seas made a similar announcement which is now followed by Crystal Cruises and Silversea…and Regent Seven Seas UK’s office. This is a good news/bad news scenario. (Remember calls and bookings do not equal gross sales increases.)
It seems the Regent Seven Seas Voyager, the flagship of the cruise line, cannot avoid problems. It hit the dock in Rhodes, it snagged a fishing net on its transatlantic voyage about four months ago and now has another fishing net apparently wrapped around one of its pods. (I also heard the Crystal Serenity presently
I haven’t written much about Oceania Cruises. I guess, in part, is because its new sister (Regent) has so preoccupied my thoughts. Oceania is a solid performing cruise line that consistently does what it does well and without pretense of being something it is not. Oceania is not, and does not pretend to be, a
