The startup of a new ship is always exciting. The startup of a new expedition line is even more so. Being on one of the first sailings is a truly unique experience. Being able to do so at incredibly low prices is the cherry on top!

Back in February, I wrote about the new expedition company, Terra Nova Expeditions, and its first expedition ship, St. Helena: Goldring Travel’s Small Ship Antarctica Expedition on Terra Nova Expeditions’ St. Helena (and Maybe a 6 Guest Sailing Yacht) – January 16, 2027.

Since then, much has happened. But before we get into it, let’s discuss why I am so excited about this new company and why I am so confident not only sailing on one of its first voyages, but willing to host you on it.
First, the most important aspect of an Antarctic expedition is not the ship, but the expedition team. They not only make sure you “get out there” but also that you are safe, educated, and feel like part of the team. Greg Carter is the CEO and Founder of Terra Nova Expeditions. We first met when he was at Chimu Adventures, and I sailed on a dog of a ship, Ocean Endeavour (which has just exited the expedition market and is being used as a housing ship in Greenland for miners…a far better use of it.) My prior experience with Greg emphasized his focus that a great expedition team is what matters most (and it was one of the most memorable of my nine Antarctic expeditions).
While statistics such as the crew having 100+ years of experience are great, who the expedition team is matters more. Terra Nova has put together an impressive expedition team.
- Gaby Pilson is the Expedition Leader and a true outdoors person, including a love of education through experience. With a B.A in Environmental Studies and Philosophy from Hamilton College (NY) and an MS in Outdoor Education from the University of Edinburgh, Gaby has over four years of guiding expeditions in the polar regions.
- Laura Mony is the Assistant Expedition Leader and has been guiding in the polar regions for over eight years, putting her BS in Geological Engineering and Master’s in Marine and Antarctic Science to good use, also working as a geologist and glaciologist
- Dr. Sara Torres Ortiz is the Citizen Science Coordinator with an impressive background in scientific research and a decade of expedition experience.
- Renato Granieri is an award-winning wildlife photographer who started working in Antarctica in 2015, eventually twice winning the National Geographic Traveler Grand Prize in 2018 and 2023!
- Felix Asking is the Kayak Lead with seven years of experience leading remote expeditions in polar regions.
- Juan Cascallares is the Camping and Snowshoe Guide and a naturalist with over 20 years of experience, including outdoor education and responsible exploration.
While there are obviously others, it is clear that Terra Nova has assembled an impressive, seasoned core for its expedition team Terra Nova is making sure that the expedition team and YOU have all the tools necessary to make the most of your Antarctic expedition by including at no extra charge virtually all activities, such as:
- Kayaking
- Trekking
- Snowshoeing (pre-book required)
- Open Air Camping (pre-booking required)
- Photography
- Yoga
- Zodiac Cruising
- Polar Plunge and more
And then there is a ship, which I detailed in my first article. She is unique and, to be sure, stunning, especially for a true expedition ship!

And then add in that also included are:
- Starlink
- All gratuities
- Drinks with meals
